When the weather is overcast people usually associate it with melancholy and infinite sadness. With the varying shades of grey splashed across the firmament, it's easy to see why.

Grey is often seen as the color of boredom and is many times used as a synonym for despondency. Grey is often used in describing someone's dismal personality or tasteless character.

On the other hand, grey seems to be the color of elegance and sophistication in upper class circles and a very flexible fashion pigment in the sense that it blends well with other members of the color spectrum.

Back to the weather.

People often bemoan the effect of a cloudy day as unpleasant, and inconvenient when accompanied by rain. Worse, when there's a downpour. I, however, have a different take on this meteorological phenomenon.

When clouds have a massive congregation in the sky, they make the climate cooler. When the climate is cooler, the tendency to sweat is significantly decreased. When sweating is not an issue, fashion becomes one. It is during the cool and overcast days that I get to play around with layers of clothing, which I would not normally be able to do under the blazing sun. Simply put, grey skies are a fashion enthusiast's friend.

Sometimes when the presence of nimbus clouds is followed by rain showers -- mild or wild -- people usually curse this occurrence and run for cover from the possibility of getting drenched head to foot.

Not, me! Or at least not all the time. I don't run for cover... ever... when I have an umbrella, that is! I do, however, sometimes relish a good walk under a drizzly, grey afternoon -- there's just something poetic about that... especially when already done with the workday and homeward bound.

Also, for an introvert, a cloudy day is the perfect setup for a stay-at-home downtime: the prevailing mood, somber; the temperature, moderate; the ambience, relaxing. It's conducive to binge-watching one's favorite television series, or  reading a good book (or a slew of good books), or just simply spending some snuggle time in bed with your trusty pillow (or trusty fellow, if you have one).

Overall, as long as the clouds aren't threatening to introduce a thunderstorm or torrential rains, a typical grey day is a welcome respite from the sweltering heat characteristic of a tropical island country. It's a rarity; a treasured zone that one seldom finds...

  2. According to the World Atlas, Cropp River, NZ is the fourth wettest place on earth (in terms of the amount of rainfall). NYC did not even make it to the top ten. So yeah, I take that back. 🤣
